Of the 18,000 to 20,000 known species of butterflies in the world, about half occur in the Neotropical Region. It would be impossible to treat every species in a book of this size. Thus, the nearly 700 species that have been chosen are either those most often encountered, those that are simply very beautiful, or those that typify (by their shape and markings) characters by which related species may be recognized. The book is arranged by family, with principal genera and representative species figured, together with an indication of the number and distribution of related species.
