23 volumes. Published 1904-1922. Fine. 8vo. Illustrated with monochrome and color plates. Uniformly bound in dark morocco ruled in gilt, spines titled and tooled in gilt with five raised bands, top edges gilt.
Autograph edition, number 503 of 750 copies, with the author's signature and that of the publisher on the colophon preceding the titles page in Volume I, which also includes a tipped in, 2-page signed letter, dated November 3, 1887 from Burroughs to Leonard M. Brown of Croton-on-Hudson, New York, who had come to America in May 1887 and was hoping to pay him a visit.
Volume X includes two holograph letters tipped into the preliminary pages. The first, a 2-page letter dated October 12 (no year, but written in pencil in another's hand "c. 1877") was to Herbert H. Gilchrist, an English painter and son of Ann Gilchrist, a friend of both Burroughs and Whitman. The second is a 1-page letter, dated May 28 (no year) to an unidentified correspondent with references to Whitman, signed with Burroughs' initials.
