The Danish ornithologist H. CHR. C. MORTENSEN, who died in 1921, was the first to use the ring-marking method scientifically. He started his first experiments in 1899 and during the past fifty years they have been immensely important for all modern studies on the wanderings of migratory birds.
Mortensen has written several papers on ornithological subjects, but they have practically all been published only in Danish. To make it possible for students of bird migration in other countries to read these classic papers, the present book gives an English translation of Mortensen's papers, which are more or less connected with his marking experiments. Furthermore it contains a brief biographical sketch of this pioneer of scientific bird-marking.
