Third printing. Very good hardcover in shelf-rubbed dust jacket. Includes a bit of ephemera from a previous owner - 1960s newspaper and magazine clippings on the status of wolverines and elk in California. Many years ago, on the banks of the Feather River in California, Lloyd Ingles took his first field notes on the dusky shews that braved the light of his campfire to take cheese. These notes were the beginnings of a book written for all those people who wish to know more about the mammals of the forests, mountains, valleys, and deserts of California. In this edition, text keys have been replaced with drawings by H. Wayne Trimm of the New York State Conservation Department, arranged in twenty-five pictorial keys to assist the beginner and to simplify the process of more accurate identification. Other features include descriptions of all the living orders of mammals, a greatly expanded section on whales and other sea mammals, a section on the mammals of long ago, and descriptions of biotic communities. The excellent animal photographs taken by Dr. Ingles are carried over to this edition and are supplemented by many others.
