Very good used paperback. Skutch's purpose in Life Ascending is, above all, to increase appreciation of our splendid natural endowments and of the unique planet that supports us. Far from becoming alienated, he argues, we should cultivate loyalty to a cosmos that will not fail to support us if we cooperate intelligently and persistently with its agelong striving to make existence precious. To despair of our future on this bountiful planet reveals a failure of nerve which Skutch strives to deter in this gracefully written and deeply affirmative work.
