A quality hardcover reprint (2019) of a work first published in 1831. Color of the plates in the reprint somewhat brighter in comparison with hand colored lithographs found in the original. Fauna Boreali-Americana; or the Zoology of the Northern Parts of British America: Containing description of the objects of natural history collected on the late northern land expeditions under command of Captain Sir John Franklin, R.N. Part Second, The Birds. Illustrated with fifty color plates (Nos. 24 -73) by Swainson. John Richardson, surgeon and naturalist to the expeditions, contributed the introduction and much of text describing the species. Swainson, a talented English naturalist and illustrator, prepared the paintings and drawings and worked on the taxonomy. Swainson's Hawk, Swainson's Thrush, and Swainson's Warbler were named in his honor by Bonaparte, Nuttall, and Audubon respectively. A fine reprint of this rare and important work on the birds of the Canadian Arctic.
