Clinton Hart Merriam (December 5, 1855 –March 19, 1942) was an American zoologist, mammalogist, ornithologist, entomologist, ecologist, ethnographer, geographer, naturalist and physician.
Merriam wrote this book at 21 years of age. A year later, while attending medical school at Columbia, he helped organize the Linnaean Society of New York and served as its first president. Merriam was also an early member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club and an early contributor to its bulletin.
