Every fall, from August through December, GGRO volunteers monitor the Pacific Raptor Flyway as raptors migrate over the Marin Headlands. Friends of GGRO are hawkwatch leaders, banding leaders, long-time banders, hawkwatchers, interns, alumni, friends—and talented artists!
The work in Wings in Wisdom represents a fraction of the variety of the media and forms—from drawings to photography, painting to mixed media, textile art to giclée print, video to music—that Friends of GGRO have made over the past four decades. Some of the pieces you will see are illustrative, others impressionist; some are inspired by holding a bird in hand, others by the memory of a bird glimpsed for a few seconds. All seek to convey the awe hawk watchers and banders have felt over the decades of gathering data atop Hawk Hill: a dialogue between art and science.
