Community Spotlight: Lindsey Stone
We love getting to know birds and getting to know fellow bird nerds! Here we highlight Lindsey Stone, President of Birdability's Board of Directors. Lindsey introduces us to the wonderful work of Birdability and shares thought-provoking insights into what they're reading right now:
I'm not much of a list person, which, in some ways, makes me an unusual birder. But, I can say that my TBR (to be read) list is in the triple digits! That’s one reason I’m so excited for the chance to connect with you all at Buteo Books.
When I don’t have my nose in a book, I’m proud to serve as the president of the board at Birdability.org, a nonprofit working to ensure the birding world is welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for people with disabilities and other health concerns. Birdability’s work is a joyful mix of advocacy, education, and community-building, and I’m especially excited about Birdability Week, happening October 20–26. It’s a celebration of disabled joy and birding, featuring Instagram Live events, accessible IRL birding outings, webinars, and opportunities to connect with our community.
One book I’m loving right now is Starlings: The Curious Odyssey of a Most Hated Bird by Mike Stark. I got to hear Mike speak at the Tucson Festival of Books (a book nerd’s heaven) earlier this year, and his reflections on questions like "Who decides whether a species is worthy?" and "How long does it take to become a full-fledged citizen of a place?" have stuck with me. Exploring those themes through the natural history of a bird so often dismissed has left me with more questions than answers…as any good book should.

Buteo Books is proud to be a sponsor of this event and we encourage you to get involved and help spread the word!
