The bulk of this book is made up of the color plates. The modern spread includes Peterson's
original artwork on the right-hand page and concise species accounts on the left-hand side.
The accounts now include a thumbnail map so all the information you need is on a one-page spread.
The traditional section of larger maps in the rear of the book is still present, with notations.
The book also includes a foreword by Lee Allen Peterson, the editor's note and an introduction
with helpful notes for beginners, a complete scientific and common name index, and a life list.
A one-page index on the front endsheet allows a user to find the right page quickly. The
traditional Peterson silhouettes are still present, but included at the end of the book.
This new version is a larger format, allowing room for larger images and handy thumbnail maps.
Approximately the same size as Sibley's Field Guide to North American birds, this guide will
be a welcome addition for any birder who prefers to use a guide with larger format
illustrations, and to anyone who likes to have a guide for both Eastern and Western species
in one volume.
