Shorebirds of Australia

Shorebirds of Australia.

by Andrew Geering, Lindsay Agnew and Sandra Harding.

CSIRO Publishing, 2007.

242 pp.

Paperback - $65.00

Shorebirds of Australia describes and illustrates more than 50 species and is an essential resource for ornithologists, birders, and naturalists.

Early chapters deal with basic aspects of the taxonomy and biology of waders. As the majority of waders are long distance travelers and only spend a portion of their life cycle in Australia, much of the information presented in these chapters applies equally to waders in other parts of the world. The book then focuses on the distribution and identification of waders along the Australian coast and look at the conservation of these species.

Complete with color photographs and up-to-date distribution maps, it provides descriptions and tips to assist with the identification of all species of shorebird in Australia, which comprise about 10 percent of Australia’s total avifauna. In addition to information about their habitats, the most significant threats to their existence are mentioned, as well as actions in place to help conserve these birds.

Each species account includes color photos, a color distribution map, and details on: identification and habitat, field marks of adult non-breeding, adult breeding, and juvenile, flight, voice, range, habits, and similar species.
